In order to give you the advantages of each of the two most commonly used materials, we have compiled the following overview.

Can I reuse dental floss?

Dental floss should not be used more than once, as it has already absorbed some plaque and bacteria after use.

Did you know that about 20 million bacteria live in our mouth?

About 20 million bacteria live in our mouth. Some of them block pathogens, while others are responsible for the development of caries. They are also responsible for bad breath.

Plaque, i.e. bacterial plaque, is deposited particularly in interdental spaces. If this plaque accumulates and multiplies, it can lead to caries and periodontitis.

To avoid expensive visits to the dentist and painful treatments, interdental care is extremely important. In addition, you can also use mouthwashes or tongue cleaners.

It is ideal if the dental floss is used once a day. It is better to use dental floss first and then brush your teeth.

How is dental floss used correctly?

Not only the daily use, but also the correct handling is important. You should pay attention to a tight thread and the correct posture.

You can use the dental floss either in the morning or in the evening before brushing your teeth. It is best to take a 30 to 40 centimetre long thread, wrap it once around both index fingers and tighten it.

Then carefully push the cleaning thread between the teeth with a back and forth motion. Then you have to put the thread c-shaped around the tooth and move it up and down. Also take care to clean the gum line.

If you bleed from using dental floss, either be a little more careful or change the floss.

However, you may have gum inflammation, so consult a dentist.

Acuh you should make sure that you use the right floss for you.

For example, there is fluffy floss with a round cord shape that should be used to care for larger interdental spaces, such as bone loss or dentures.

For exactly the same type of use, a flat and smooth dental silk, also known as a dental band, is recommended. This silk can easily penetrate into the narrow spaces between the teeth and thus prevent tooth decay.

Did you know that every German uses about 1.5 meters of dental floss a year?

On average, every German uses 1.5 metres of dental floss per year. That sounds a lot at first, but it isn’t. In fact, it is 178.5 metres too little. Although tooth decay occurs mainly in the interdental spaces, it is simply easier to brush your teeth with a toothbrush and forget about floss.

Decision: What types of dental floss are there and which one is right for you?

Basically one can distinguish between four different types of dental floss products:

  • Unwaxed dental floss
  • Waxed dental floss
  • velour floss
  • floppy

Due to the different fields of application and your own preference, a certain dental floss is best suited for you and your teeth. This, together with the fact that not every type of floss is the same, results in different advantages and disadvantages.

We would therefore like to introduce you to the different types in the following section and help you to find out which floss is right for you. We will introduce you to the above mentioned types in more detail and explain their advantages and disadvantages.

How does unwaxed dental floss work and what are its advantages and disadvantages?

Unwaxed floss is the most natural way to clean your interdental spaces. In principle, you should floss your teeth at least every two days to remove stubborn plaque and prevent tooth decay.

However, if you have never used floss before, you should buy waxed silk. This will allow you to slowly get your gums used to cleaning, which will bleed easily after the first treatments.

Cleaning your interdental spaces is easier due to the fact that unwaxed floss will easily fray during use. However, it can also happen that the silk gets caught on fillings and gets stuck or tears apart.

How does a waxed dental floss work and what are its advantages and disadvantages?

Waxed dental floss is particularly suitable for people who have very sensitive gums or who have difficulty reaching narrow spaces between them. Bleeding gums is no longer an issue due to the smooth surface of the silk.

The surface structure of a waxed dental floss minimizes friction to guarantee a trouble-free cleaning experience. However, small amounts of wax can get stuck in the interdental spaces during cleaning.

The dental floss can be coated with wax or a PTFE compound. PTFE is a polymer also known as Teflon and Gore-Tex. Dental floss coated with PTFE is practical for dental care but unfortunately not environmentally friendly.

Most products are additionally coated with fluorides and flavourings. This not only prevents the formation of caries during application, but also spreads a pleasant taste in the mouth. Typical flavouring substances include mint or eucalyptus.

How does a floss work and what are its advantages and disadvantages?

A velcro floss is perfect for cleaning braces and hard-to-reach areas just above the gums. A floss consists of an ordinary part and a thicker fluffy part.

The fluffy section is stretchy and the large surface ensures thorough cleaning of your interdental spaces. These dental floss are usually equipped with a reinforced end for easy access to narrow spaces.

An interdental brush can be used as an alternative or in addition to a floss. With such a brush, small wires are clamped with bristles, which can be used to remove specific deposits in the gaps.

How does a fin work and what are its advantages and disadvantages?

The flosette is often called a dental floss stick or fiddle and is a plastic holder that holds a clamped piece of dental floss for cleaning your interdental spaces.

The plastic construction keeps your hands and bathroom mirror clean. The handling with a flossette is also much easier than with conventional dental floss. This makes dental care easier, especially for children who are still very inexperienced.

Since the floss is already pre-tensioned in most holders, the flossette must be rinsed off after each intermediate area has been cleaned. This means that the cleaning effect is not optimal, as residues can be pushed back into other spaces.

Purchase criteria: Based on these factors you can compare and rate dental floss

In the following, we would like to show you important factors that you can use to compare and evaluate dental floss. This should make your purchase decision easier.

In summary, the following criteria are considered:

  • Material
  • coating
  • Scope of delivery

In the next paragraphs we explain the purchase criteria in more detail and how they are to be evaluated.

Material

This decision is primarily about whether you prefer a natural product or the cheaper one.

The natural silk is obtained from silkworms and in most cases coated with beeswax. Therefore this dental floss is not vegan.

Dental floss made of nylon or polyethylene are plastics that are produced from petroleum, among other things. Since the production is clearly more favorable, this kind of the dental floss is very inexpensive.

The velcro floss, also known as Superfloss, Special Floss or Ultrafloss, is also made of plastic and is very popular due to its material composition. It is more expensive than conventional dental floss, but if you are a newcomer to flossing, this product can be worth your while.

Coating

Basically, the cleaning effect of unwaxed or waxed dental floss does not differ.

The purchase decision depends very much on what feels best for you. Waxed dental floss is often more comfortable to handle, although it can be more difficult to grasp it with your fingers, as it is somewhat more slippery than unwaxed dental floss. The coating consists either of beeswax or a Teflon coating. For vegans only the latter comes into question in this case.

Some dental floss are also coated with additives, such as fluoride and chlorhexine. These substances can be found in toothpaste and are intended to harden the enamel and thus protect the tooth from tooth decay. However, the concentration of these additives on dental floss is so low that they have hardly any influence.

You can find out which floss is right for you by trying it out.

Scope of delivery

Depending on how often you intend to clean your teeth with dental floss, it is a good idea to buy larger quantities, as the unit price is then usually lower.

If you plan to use dental floss daily, as recommended, a pack of 50 meters of floss will last about 100 to 125 days. A piece of floss should be between 40 and 50 centimeters long. A pack of Superfloss containing 50 pieces will therefore only last 50 days.

At the beginning it is advisable to buy only one pack so that you can try out which floss is best for you and avoid mispurchases.

beautiful smile

Proper dental hygiene is crucial for a particularly radiant smile. In addition to the right toothbrush and toothpaste, this includes good dental floss. This gives you an all-round clean and radiant smile.

Trivia: Facts worth knowing about dental flossing

Can I floss my own teeth?

If you want to live without plastic, you can make your own dental floss.

You take a piece of silk fabric and separate the individual threads. Then you twist them together and use them as dental floss, as already described.

What are the alternatives?

Interdental or sonic toothbrushes are also suitable as alternatives for interdental care. However, they are thicker than dental floss and not suitable for people with small interdental spaces.

You can also buy oral showers that clean your interdental spaces with a jet of water.
