President's Report by Beverly Patchell, President, NANAINA

Blessings to everyone! The date of NANAINA’s National Summit is fast approaching. I hope everyone reading this is planning to attend at least some of the events. You will be a part of history ~ for the first time we will offer a preconference and a Founder’s Symposium. The pre-conference is “Recognizing Toxic Exposure and Contamination in Patients” and is presented by the Center for Disease Control’s Agency on Toxic Substances and Disease Registry. You will receive a trainer’s manual and be able to share the information with your coworkers and community. This training will augment any other disaster training already experienced by healthcare providers.

The Summit will be two full days plus the evening business meeting on Nov. 12th. At the business meeting you will hear about the local and national efforts of the organization and the collaborative agreements we have made over the year and plans for the upcoming year. We will also be electing officers for the upcoming year and The theme of this year’s conference is “Honoring Our Traditions” and explores how nurses can honor traditional medicine ways of Native people in the practice of Western medicine.

We will begin a new tradition by having the inaugural Founders Symposium, this year honoring Roxanne Struthers, the 2006 President that we tragically lost last year. Her legacy of professional work will be explored during the conference on Monday afternoon and a more personal honoring will occur at the banquet on Monday night. Many other offerings at the conference will expand our horizons regarding sharing nursing and caring through nursing at all of the passages on the wheel of life. The local nursing organizations, Arizona State University and the Indian Health Service have been an integral part of the planning and development of this conference. So please join us and participate in all the ways that we honor our many paths of medicine and our Native patients, families and communities. Wado,

Beverly Patchell, RN, MS, CNS
President
